(StraightNews.org) — US Attorney for the Southern District of California has said that the deadly drug fentanyl is coming in to the United States via the southern border on a daily basis. Randy Grossman claimed the drug is coming in cars and concealed in people’s clothing. Prosecutions involving fentanyl have increased 800% over the last 5 years. Grossman said he is prepared for an increase in drug traffic through the border and is adopting an aggressive strategy of both prosecution and education.
Meanwhile, US federal drug agents said they seized enough fentanyl in 2022 to kill every single American. The drug is a growing concern for law enforcement agencies as it is particularly potent and particularly dangerous – it is thought to be 50 times stronger than heroin. A tiny dose, small enough to fit on top of a pencil, can kill, and two-thirds of drug deaths in the United States in 2021 were attributed to it. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) intercepted 379 million doses last year and says that most of them are coming through the southern border from Mexico.
Cartels south of the border are buying cheap chemicals from China and converting these in to the powerful drug in Mexico, the DEA has said. The primary producers are the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels. DEA’s top operational priority is to defeat the two Mexican drug cartels that are primarily responsible for the fentanyl that is killing Americans today’” DEA Administrator Anne Milgram stated.
The DEA launched its ‘One Pill Can Kill’ public awareness campaign in September last year. A year later the Department of Justice reported on 390 investigations that had been undertaken in that time and that most of these can be linked to the two Mexican cartels. It also described fentanyl as the most dangerous drug threat facing the nation.
