(StraightNews.org) – Hillary Clinton sparked outrage from Donald Trump supporters during a recent interview when she said they needed to be deprogrammed. The former Secretary of State, whom Trump defeated in 2016, referred to Make America Great Again (MAGA) “extremists” and said, “maybe there needs to be a formal deprogramming of the cult members.”
Trump supporters immediately seized upon the remarks as evidence that the former President is accurate when he tells Americans that the elite, such as Clinton, hold them in contempt and Donald Trump is protecting them from that contempt.
A spokesperson for Trump’s Make America Great Again Inc. super PAC said, “President Trump has said countless times that they are only coming after him because he stands in their way from coming after you—and Hillary Clinton just confirmed that to be true.”
Trump administration Treasury Assistant Monica Crowley described the remarks as “a call for tyranny,” while former White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany tweeted that the comments amounted to “Deplorable Moment times 10!”
The “deplorables” reference dates back to the Presidential campaign of 2016 when Clinton gave the label to Trump supporters during a speech in New York. Calling MAGA supporters “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic – you name it,” she added that Trump voters were “irredeemable” and “not America.”
During an interview around the same time, Clinton described two kinds of Trump voters – half were “desperate for change” and felt let down by the mainstream political system. Others, she said, were people who think they can “somehow restore an America that no longer exists.” She referred to the second group as “deplorables.”
Some Donald Trump fans embraced the label and began to refer to themselves as deplorable as the campaign continued. T-shirts declaring “I’m Deplorable” soon appeared on Trump’s campaign websites, along with others stating, “Deplorable Lives Matter.”
The Trump campaign released a video saying, “You know what’s deplorable? Hillary Clinton viciously demonizing hardworking people like you.”
