(StraightNews.org) — Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz has introduced a resolution to the House calling on lawmakers to end aid to Ukraine and pursue a peace process instead. The Republican released a statement about his proposal and said that America is in a state of decline and we should stop funding foreign wars. He mentioned comments made by President Biden in 2022 warning that arming Ukraine could help to start World War III. “We must suspend all foreign aid for the War in Ukraine and demand that all combatants in this conflict reach a peace agreement immediately,” Gaetz said.
In March 2022, President Biden said direct US involvement in Ukraine could trigger a world war, but in January of this year, the President announced he was sending 31 M1 Abrams tanks to the Eastern European country, leading some to question if he has gone back on his word, or if he is indeed willing to risk world war. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) for example asked if other people remembered Biden saying sending tanks to Ukraine would lead to World War III. “Now he’s sending tanks to Ukraine,” she said on Twitter. The Russian military has in fact played down the issue and said US tanks will do very little to help the Ukrainian cause.
The United States has given more than $100 billion to Ukraine since its war with Russia began in February 2022. Prior to the midterm elections last November, Kevin McCarthy, now the Speaker of the House, said there would be no “blank check” for Ukraine should the GOP take control of the House. Since doing so, the Republicans have pursued oversight and accountability and want more information on where the money is going. The United States is by far the biggest donor to Ukraine, but European countries have recently been providing tanks and other weaponry.
The Gaetz resolution has won the support of ten Republican co-sponsors including Reps. Lauren Boebert, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Paul Gozar.
