(StraightNews.org) — An anti-abortion group has lashed out at former President Donald Trump and said his views are “indefensible.” Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America (SBA) is one of the nation’s largest anti-abortion groups and called on GOP Presidential candidates to back a nationwide 15-week abortion ban, saying Trump’s belief that the matter should be left up to states was not the right solution.
A spokesman for Trump described him as the most pro-life President in history, but confirmed his view that states should have the right to legislate as they see fit. “Like President Reagan before him, President Trump supports exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother,” the spokesman added.
SBA said Trump’s position is unacceptable because it allows for “brutal late-term abortions” in states such as California and Illinois.
The issue is becoming a difficult one for Republicans and exposing a rift inside the GOP. Trump has previously stated that focusing on the issue and promoting a no-exceptions philosophy, was partly responsible for the poor performance of the GOP in last year’s midterms. He said he would not support a national ban because it would be a major vote loser for Republicans. A Gallup poll in 2022 found that only 13% of Americans support the criminalization of abortion.
Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade last year, voters in Republican-led states have expressed support for abortion rights, making the issue difficult for GOP candidates to navigate.
Former Vice President Mike Pence has put his views forward and said that the abortion pill Mifepristone should not be on the market. Pence argued that the Food and Drug Administration “exceeded its authority in approving the abortion pill.”
Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Trump’s main rival, has passed legislation in the Sunshine State that bans abortion after six weeks gestation. Florida joined Georgia, which also bans the procedure after six weeks. Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi have all prohibited it outright and without exceptions apart from the mother’s health.
