(StraightNews.org) – President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, has agreed to a private deposition with the House Oversight Committee in February. Committee chair Rep. James Comer said Biden, who had insisted on testifying publicly, would be able to do so after he has been questioned in private.
In December, following a subpoena to appear before the Oversight Committee, Hunter Biden accused Republicans of trying to embarrass him to damage his father. Saying he would respond to questions but only in public, he stated, “Republicans do not want an open process where Americans can see their tactics, expose their baseless inquiry, or hear what I have to say.”
The Oversight Committee wants to question Hunter Biden as part of its impeachment inquiry against President Biden. Republicans on the Committee believe the President profited from foreign businesses during the Obama administration and is probing the family’s financial affairs.
Republicans were on the verge of advancing a contempt resolution against the President’s son for his refusal to testify but called this off to give his attorneys additional time to negotiate. If the contempt resolution had proceeded, the decision on whether to prosecute Hunter Biden would have been passed to the Justice Department for determination by the US Attorney for the District of Columbia.
The agreement for a private testimony was made after Hunter Biden’s legal team wrote to Mr. Comer and the House Judiciary Committee chair Jim Jordan saying their client would appear if a new subpoena is issued, arguing that previous subpoenas were invalid because they were issued before the House of Representatives authorized the impeachment inquiry into the President’s alleged wrongdoing.
The impeachment process began last September and focused heavily on Hunter Biden’s foreign business interests. The President has dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and said, “Instead of doing anything to help make Americans’ lives better, they are focused on attacking me with lies.” The vote to advance impeachment proceedings carried along party lines at 221 votes to 212.
