(Straightnews.org) Vice President Kamala Harris has formally filed to run for President of the United States. Federal Election Commission filings confirmed Harris’s status on the day she secured enough Democratic delegates to become the party’s nominee. Most of Harris’s potential rivals, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, quickly got behind her, and she won endorsements from Democratic grandees, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Bill and Hillary Clinton. Harris campaign officials also reported that the Vice President had raised over $80 million in 24 hours, claiming much of this came from small donors.
The California native’s record as Vice President has come under intense media scrutiny, particularly her role in the Biden administration’s failure to secure the US southern border. Donald Trump’s campaign immediately attacked Harris on this issue, saying it was her job as a “border czar” to reduce illegal migration, but she had instead created the “worst border ever.”
President Biden reportedly appointed Harris as “border czar” in 2021, but she quickly faced criticism for failing to visit the southern border and dismissing its significance during a media interview. “I haven’t been to Europe,” she sarcastically stated. Harris supporters, however, say the Vice President was never in charge of immigration and that the issue is in the remit of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Reports indicate that Harris intended to persuade companies to invest in Central American countries to create jobs and tackle the poverty she believes prompts people to migrate to the United States.
Critics, however, say that even if Harris were successful in that aim, it would not have prevented the exploding number of people arriving from other parts of the world.
The Vice President’s approach to Israel has also come under the spotlight. Last December, for instance, Harris traveled to Dubai, where she called on the Jewish state to take more care to protect the lives of Palestinian civilians. She has previously expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself but added, “It matters how.”
