FDA Alerts Public To Toxic Gummies & Chocolate Bars

(StraightNews.org) The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned America that Diamond Shruumz candy could cause illness. The federal agency announced that chocolate bars, cones, and gummies had been recalled and directed stores nationwide not to sell the products. It noted that retail and online sales, including smoke and vape stores, should end, and consumers should check their homes for the affected products and discard them.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported working with the FDA, America’s Poison Centers, and local partners to investigate reports of “acute” illness associated with the candy products. By July 15, the CDC said it received 69 illness reports, including 36 cases serious enough to warrant hospitalization.

The episode commenced in June when Prophet Premium Blends LLC, based in Santa Ana, California, recalled all flavors of Diamond Shruumz chocolate, gummies, and cones. The CDC further noted that the products were distributed by retailers who stock edibles containing tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient in cannabis. “Products containing psychoactive compounds such as cannabis or mushroom extracts are increasing in availability,” it stated.

As part of the investigation, the FDA and its partners collected several samples of the affected candies and found that the Diamond Shruumz Dark Chocolate Bar contained desmethoxyyangonin, 4-acetoxy-N, N-dimethyltryptamine, dihydrokavain, and kavain. The CDC confirmed it does not fully understand the impact of these ingredients on the body but warned that they are undisclosed on packaging and could cause severe health problems.

The Blue Ridge Poison Center at the University of Virginia stated that psilocin was also found in some of the Diamond Shruumz products. This hallucinogenic is a controlled substance and is found in so-called “magic mushrooms.” Dr. Avery Michienzi, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Virginia, said such products are not regulated – allowing producers to add potentially dangerous ingredients without scrutiny. “I would caution people to be very wary of these products because, as it stands now, no one’s looking at them,” he said.
