(StraightNews.org) Donald Trump’s attorneys have launched an appeal to overturn a $500 million fraud judgement, saying it was erroneous. The judgement was handed down by Manhattan Judge Arthur Engoron after Trump was accused of lying to banks by misrepresenting the value of his assets. New York Attorney General Letitia James filed the charges against the former President, which he insisted were politically motivated. The appeal argues that Engoron’s decision was “erroneous” and “egregious” and that the case should have been dismissed at the outset.
The former President’s lawyers also argue that James’ interference in private business transactions will make businesses wary and damage the Empire State’s economy. The attorneys say that Ms. James’ behaviour demonstrates “limitless power to target anyone she desires, including her self-described political opponents.”
During the trial, the former President’s lawyers made similar arguments, most of them dismissed by Engoron. Trump attorney Christopher Kise said the judge “ignored the undisputed facts” during the trial and “willingly allowed a reckless, politically motivated Attorney General to meddle in lawful, private, and mutually profitable transactions.”
Appeal arguments will be heard in September, and Letitia James’ office contends that Trump’s assertions are unfounded. A written statement said the Attorney General won the case on facts and in law and is “confident we will prevail on appeal.”
Letitia James attracted criticism when she filed the case against Trump, with many commentators accusing her of unprofessionalism. She is an outspoken critic of Donald Trump and has described him as a “con man.” James promised to shine a “bright light into every dark corner of his real estate dealings when she ran for office.”
Immediately after taking office in 2019, Ms. James began investigating Mr. Trump’s business and real estate dealings and launched several lawsuits against him that centred around his immigration and energy production policies while he was in the Oval Office. She settled a separate case she had inherited by issuing a $2 million fine.
