(StraightNews.org) A reporter has recounted Joe Biden’s remarks about older politicians, notably former Senate Foreign Relations Committee chair Claiborne Pell. Mr. Pell was in his late 70s when Biden told a reporter that the Senator knew it was time to leave politics, but he clung on because he could not envisage life outside of Congress.
Former White House reporter Tom Galvin recited the story and said Biden referred to Pell as that “poor son of a b*tch.” He explained that Biden told him the Senator was not up to the job, given his advanced age. Galvin said he did not print the story at the time because he had “no intention of writing about Pell,” but remembers thinking Biden was indiscreet and willing to make contentious remarks to a reporter he did not know.
Politicians’ ages have been in the spotlight since the Presidential primaries got underway, and a rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump appeared inevitable. Biden is the oldest sitting US President at 81, while Donald Trump is just three years younger. Republicans, including Trump, have placed significant emphasis on Biden’s age, a move that some commentators suggest will come back to bite them as Trump inevitably faces a younger opponent following Biden’s withdrawal. At 78, Trump will be older at the end of a second term than Biden is now.
During her primary campaign against the former President, Nikki Haley repeatedly noted Trump’s gaffes and blamed them on age-related decline. She also predicted that whatever party “retires” its elderly candidate will be the party that wins the election.
President Biden withdrew from the Presidential race after weeks of scrutiny that began after his poor performance against Trump in the opening Atlanta debate. The President said he would finish his term in the White House and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place. Several Democratic donors have rallied around 59-year-old Harris, and insiders report renewed excitement inside the Democratic party.
