(StraightNews.org) – Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), who is black, has accused Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who is white, of racism. The accusation comes after Greene made a comment about Crockett’s “fake eyelashes”, and Crockett appeared to retaliate with a comment about a “bad built butch body.”
The name-calling between the two lawmakers, who each receive a base salary of $174,000 for their roles in Congress, came during a meeting about a resolution to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt. During the meeting, Crockett asked Greene if she knew what the meeting was in aid of after Greene asked an apparently unrelated question of the Democrat members present. Greene responded that perhaps Crockett was the confused attendee, unable to read the notes correctly due to her “fake eyelashes.”
Crockett’s fellow Democrat, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (NY), castigated Greene for making a comment about somebody’s appearance. There followed a failed attempt to have Greene’s comments stricken from the record, which would have resulted in Greene being forced to remain silent for the rest of the meeting. Later in the meeting, Crockett addressed a hypothetical question to committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) in which she asked if somebody in the meeting would be breaking the rules were they to refer to somebody being “bleach blonde” or having a “butch body.”
While Ocasio-Cortez and Crockett have both gone on to call Greene’s comment about eyelashes “racist,” Greene’s office released a statement that said she did not bring skin color into the matter, unlike Crockett. Crockett claimed that she made the consequent remarks about body types and the accusations of racism because she was a “grown woman” and felt that she was standing up for herself.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La) described the exchange as “regrettable” and said that it was important to maintain proper decorum in the House of Representatives. Greene dismissed his comments as “ridiculous,” given that in her view, Democrats refuse to maintain any decorum at all.
