(StraightNews.org) – Former NBA star Darius Morris has died at the age of 33. His family announced the death to reporters and said they were devastated by the loss. The statement did not say how Morris died, but that his body was found in Los Angeles on May 3.
The former LA Lakers point guard began his high school basketball career before moving on to college stardom at the University of Michigan. He was a second-round pick for the Lakers in 2011 but stayed for just two seasons before transferring to the Philadelphia 76ers in 2013. He also performed with the Portland Trail Blazers, the San Antonio Spurs, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, and the Brooklyn Nets before moving abroad and joining teams in China, Russia, and France.
Mr. Morris’s death is the second involving a young American sports star in the past few weeks. Former Miami Dolphins NFL star Vontae Davis was found dead in his Florida home in April. He was 35. Miami Police Department officers said they received an emergency call from Mr. Davis’s assistant, saying she had discovered his body. Police said foul play was not suspected but did not release a cause of death.
Davis famously retired from football mid-game in 2019. While playing for the Buffalo Bills, losing 28-6 to the Los Angeles Chargers, the 30-year-old walked away from the game and went home. Fans speculated whether he was suffering from mental or physical health problems, but a year later, he insisted he had made the right decision and had no regrets.
Nevertheless, the star reportedly had a history of alcohol problems, and in 2023, was found asleep by the side of a Florida highway after crashing his car while driving under the influence. He made a plea deal with prosecutors and pledged to carry out 50 hours of community service and cover the medical fees of others involved in the crash. Photos showed Davis passed out in the back of a police car.
