FBI Informant Accused of Lying About Hunter Biden’s Ukraine Business

(StraightNews.org) – Special Counsel David Weiss has filed charges against an FBI informer for allegedly lying about payments to President Biden and his son, Hunter Biden. Alexander Smirnov reportedly told the FBI that Ukrainian gas company Burisma paid the Bidens $5 million each in 2015 or 2016, but the indictment states that he only had contact with the company after that time.

The indictment against Smirnov furthermore states that he told the FBI that Burisma hired Hunter Biden because he would “protect us, through his dad.” He allegedly repeated those claims in a second interview with federal agents last September and made additional “false claims” after meeting with Russian officials.

The development could undermine Republican Congressional accusations that the President profited from his son’s business contacts when he was Vice President, accusations that partly form the basis of impeachment proceedings against the President. Mr. Smirnov appeared in a Las Vegas courtroom on February 15 but did not enter a plea.

Speaking to reporter Kristen Welker, Rep. Mike Turner, GOP chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, played down the significance of Smirnov’s indictment and said the impeachment inquiry into President Biden’s conduct should continue. Turner said the investigation rests not on Mr. Smirnov’s input but is based on bank records and documented transactions involving “large sums of money.” He added that an inquiry into how “these funds got to the Biden family” is entirely legitimate because that money came from international sources, including China, Russia, and Ukraine.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer agreed and said the Smirnov indictment does not undermine the case against the Bidens.

David Weiss is the same special counsel who is investigating Hunter Biden for alleged gun crimes and has charged the President’s son for offenses related to a federal form he filled out in 2018 when buying a handgun. According to his own memoirs, the President’s son was a heavy drug user at the time but did not disclose this, which is a felony offense.
