New Orleans Tour Guide Allegedly Killed by Illegal with Checkered Past?

(StraightNews.org) – Three teenagers have been arrested for the murder of a New Orleans tour guide, one of them an illegal immigrant with a criminal history in the US. New Orleans police detained 19-year-old Joshua Bonifacio-Avila, 17-year-old Jerben Albarec, and 15-year-old Kevin Nunez the day after 43-year-old Kristie Thibodeaux was shot to death in her car in the French Quarter of the Louisiana city.

Police have accused Nunez of pulling the trigger, and reports note that he was the subject of an active arrest warrant when the killing occurred and was wearing a deactivated ankle monitor.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents say Aviala-Bonifacio, a Honduran national, entered the US illegally in 2019 and was encountered at the border near Hidalgo, Texas. An ICE spokesperson added that the Honduran had been arrested numerous times for crimes including theft and several local violations.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said they “should have never been in Louisiana. Enough is enough.”

According to data from the Governor’s office, there were approximately 97,000 illegal immigrants in Louisiana in 2021, a figure experts say is likely far higher in 2024. In June, just days before the New Orleans murder, Governor Landry withdrew state funding to a Catholic homeless charity, saying it was facilitating and encouraging illegal migration.

Mr. Landry cut $1 million from the Catholic Charities of Acadiana, saying its “mission is to support the influx of illegal aliens.” Spokesman Ben Broussard said the cut would devastate the organization, particularly its Lafayette homeless shelter, which is the largest in the region. He added that most of the people who use the shelter are Americans.

The Governor remained unconvinced, however, and questioned its use of taxpayer money. Since entering office, Landry has made illegal migration a central focus and introduced legislation to collect data on immigrants, as well as providing 150 National Guard personnel to help reinforce border control in Texas, where lawmakers have likewise accused Catholic groups of encouraging illegal immigration.
