(StraightNews.org) New York City Mayor Eric Adams is under scrutiny after claiming that subway crime is down in the city but failing to address the rise of violence above ground. Several high-profile murders have occurred in Manhattan in recent weeks, prompting outrage from Big Apple commentators and residents.
On June 11, for instance, a 22-year-old woman, Jordin Walston, was stabbed to death outside the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Less than a week later, Efrain Patino Guerra was punched by a taxi driver and subsequently died. On June 23, a fistfight broke out on 14th Street, during which 38-year-old Clemson Coxfield was knifed to death. Yazmeen Williams was killed and placed in a garbage bag soon after that, and her body was found when a passerby noticed the bag on a New York City sidewalk. Several other murders, including that of 74-year-old Fermin Brito and an unnamed 55-year-old man, soon followed.
Figures indicate that violent incidents have risen dramatically in Manhattan and are up 27% since last year.
New York City media commentators accuse Eric Adams of massaging figures and presenting a false “crime is down” narrative to the public. His defenders, however, say the Democratic elite in the state ties the Mayor’s hands. Democratic consultant Hank Sheinkopf said, “Adam is a victim of Albany, and so are the rest of New Yorkers.”
Commentators state that Mr. Adams, a former police captain, has tried to increase punishments and tackle recidivism with strict measures but has received backlash from fellow Democrats.
Democratic consultant Jake Dilemani said Adams is routinely pressured to reduce his demands for law enforcement funding and carefully word his requests. Consultant Chris Coffey agreed and said, “Talking about bail reform with the leadership in the Legislature is not a way to curry favor.”
Republicans have partly blamed the New York crime rise on migration, with surveys indicating that many Big Apple residents agree. One poll showed that 70% of New Yorkers blame recent crime increases on illegal immigrants.
