Wrestler John Cena announced his retirement at a Toronto event, stunning his fans. Cena will quit in 2025 but will perform in over 40 events before then. The 47-year-old made the announcement after climbing into the ring in front of thousands of fans and stating that his 24 years at World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) were soon to end. “Thank you so much for letting me play in the house you built for so many years,” he said.
The Canadian crowd chanted, “Thank you, Cena,” as the wrestler spoke. He unveiled a T-shirt labeled “The Last Time is Now” and “John Cena Farewell Tour” before confirming that Wrestlemania 2025 would be his final event.
Cena’s WWE career began in 2001, and since then, he has won a world championship belt 16 times, making him one of the most successful competitors in the industry’s history. Mr. Cena made his acting debut in 2006 in The Marine and went on to feature in several films, including Trainwreck in 2015, The Suicide Squad in 2021, and Furious 9 in 2022. He holds the Guinness record for granting the highest number of Make-a-Wish wishes to sick children.
Born in West Newbury, Massachusetts, in 1977, to French-Canadian and Italian parents, he attended a Roman Catholic school where he was bullied over his size. This led him to ask his parents for weights to tone up and increase his strength. He would eventually launch a weightlifting career after attending Springfield College, where he excelled at football and athletics.
Later in life, Cena also enjoyed music success and released a rap album in 2005 entitled “You Can’t See Me.” A second album, “Peacemaker,” followed in 2022, on which he plays the piano—an instrument he began studying in 2016.
The wrestler announced his engagement to Elizabeth Huberdeau in 2009, and the couple married that year but divorced just three years later. He married Shay Shariatzadeh in 2019, and they currently live together in Land o’ Lakes, Florida.
