The Incident Unfolds
Late Monday night, the tragic collision occurred near Doliva Drive and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. The pursuit began when officers spotted a speeding vehicle on the boulevard and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle did not stop, leading to a chase that a supervisor eventually terminated due to the high speed. Despite the discontinued pursuit, the suspect’s vehicle collided at high speed with the side of the police car.
The incident led to the immediate death of Officer Austin Machitar, who had served with the San Diego Police Department for five years and was a field training officer. His colleague, Officer Zachary Martinez, critically injured, remains in intensive care. Martinez, a Navy reservist from Texas, has been with the department for a little over a year.

Community Reaction and Support
Mayor Todd Gloria and Police Chief Scott Wahl extended their condolences and highlighted the inherent dangers of police work. Wahl said, “We all know the hazards, but it’s days like today that are a very real reminder just how dangerous the job is.”
“Austin had a very infectious smile and a character that made him one of a kind,” Wahl said, conveying the community’s deep sense of loss. He added, “When we have police officers that are coming to work to make a difference, to help those in need, and they’re putting their lives on the line for people that they don’t even know — and last night we lost a good one.”
Investigations and Policy Debates
The California Highway Patrol will carry out an independent investigation and full reconstruction of the incident. This calls attention to recent recommendations by a city oversight commission for changes in police pursuit policies. These proposed changes would limit pursuits to violent crimes, a move intended to reduce such tragic outcomes.
“Due to a high rate of speed, a supervisor terminated that pursuit,” Police Chief Wahl reported. “Two officers working together in one vehicle were responding to that fleeing suspect, and ultimately the suspect vehicle collided at a high rate of speed into the side of their vehicle.”
The crash that ensued was catastrophic, involving two other vehicles whose drivers did not sustain significant injuries. The impact was so severe it caused the police cruiser to ignite, a scene witnessed by Italian tourist Emilia Mangiapia who described hearing a boom and seeing an explosion of fire.
Remembering the Fallen
Officer Austin Machitar’s dedication to his duty is being honored across the community and the nation. Flags at the state Capitol will be flown at half-staff in his honor, as announced by Governor Gavin Newsom. In addition, the San Diego Police Officers Association has started a donation campaign to support the families of the involved officers.
“Austin was the kind of guy who you’d want on your team,” Wahl said. His words resonate deeply amongst the officers and citizens of San Diego, reflecting the collective grief and respect for Machitar’s sacrifice.
Officer Zachary Martinez remains in the hearts and prayers of the community as he battles severe injuries. The officers’ brave actions serve as a stark reminder of the daily risks faced by law enforcement personnel. The community’s overwhelming support stands as a testament to their valor and dedication.
