Trump VP Pick’s Past Shocks Onlookers

(StraightNews.org) – Some Republicans have expressed surprise and concern about Donald Trump’s Vice Presidential pick, JD Vance. On social media, several questioned the choice of a man who had previously compared the former President to Adolf Hitler and described himself as a “never-Trump guy.” Donald Trump acknowledged that Vance has made derogatory remarks in the past but added, “he gets it now.”

Aides have suggested that Trump chose the 39-year-old Ohio Senator because data shows he fares well with younger voters, particularly in swing states such as Pennsylvania and Michigan, and appeals to the conservative old guard of the Republican Party. Mr. Trump announced his running mate on his Truth Social media account just before the Republican National Convention got underway in Milwaukee. He said Vance was “the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States” and would connect with the working class and “those who feel the American dream is slipping away.”

Nevertheless, critics say Mr. Vance holds views that could provide ammunition for Democrats eager to portray a future Trump administration as a threat to women’s rights and abortion access. Women’s campaigners have accused the Senator of encouraging wives to remain in violent marriages, which he denies. Vance did concede, however, that he believes parents should ideally stay together for their children’s sake and that divorce should not be the first response to marital problems.

The Senator has also been forced to clarify his abortion views, and despite previously stating there should be no exceptions for cases of rape or incest, he stated last year that he had changed his mind and agrees with Donald Trump regarding exceptions and leaving abortion for states to decide.

Mr. Vance is also under fire from gay rights advocates, who accuse him of seeking to outlaw gay marriage. Additionally, the Senator has previously opposed further US aid to Ukraine, believes that the 2020 Presidential election was “stolen from Trump,” and supports “large-scale deportations.”
